A SMALLER yarding of young cattle sold to mixed demand at VLE Pakenham. Competition was solid for the vealers and supplementary fed yearlings of good to very good quality, but they didn’t want to be too heavy.
There was a reasonable selection of these cattle on offer, and while the top price was four cents lower most sold at firm to slightly dearer trends.
However, competition and demand was weaker for most other cattle, and prices eased four cents to 10 cents per kilogram.
Prices for the very best quality supplementary fed yearlings, that offer very high dressing percentages and meat yields, were firm to four cents per kilogram lower.
A pen of seven steers made to a top of 232.6 cents with numerous other sales of B2 and B3 steers and heifers between 199 cents and 225 cents per kilogram.
One sale of a vealer topped the sale at 234.6 cents, but there were a number of sales of B and C muscle vealers that made between 185 cents and 225 cents per kilogram.
Both competition and demand from feedlots was much weaker, and this saw prices fall between four cents and 10 cents per kilogram.
Steers that suited made from 157 cents to 192 cents, averaging around 175 cents per kilogram.
Prices for the heifers purchased to feed on grain were between 145 cents and 175 cents per kilogram.
