FEW things have caught community imagination more than the Pioneers Park at the corner of Peel Street and Lyall Road, Berwick.
The Berwick community came together to make a strong submission that the property should be saved in perpetuity for future communities and backed this with a $250,000 fundraising campaign.
Casey Council then supported the project, as did Gembrook MP Tammy Lobato, and the unbelievable happened.
The council negotiated a deal with the government and the entire site was acquired.
Already the grounds have been transformed, the heritage building on site renovated, a Rotary rotunda built, and a drinking tap and rest area in the name of former community worker Ellis Loveridge established. More is to come.
