WHILE the supply of cattle lifted by around 30 per cent there was little to no lift in the number of good quality cattle best suiting the local trade buyers at VLE Pakenham.
Consequently, prices for the best quality vealers and yearlings were unchanged even though the top price was five cents per kilogram lower.
Away from these sales, demand was weaker for most of the other cattle sold, and prices fell three cents to 10 cents per kilogram.
Along with the larger supply came a very mixed array of cattle with a reasonable percentage being medium to heavier weight steers and heifers.
A reasonable selection of 265 vealers did not include many of the best grades, which created its own strong demand.
Prices were unchanged with price ranging between 185 cents and 232 cents per kilogram.
Demand was also very strong for the better quality supplementary fed yearlings, and these made from 200 cents to 235 cents per kilogram. Around 650 other young cattle were penned, which varied greatly in weight quality and breeding.
Some sale of better bred steers and heifers were solid with feedlot and restocker demand quite strong.
Prices for these cattle were between 172 cents and 197 cents, and were unchanged, but away from these limited sales other vealers and yearlings were cheaper.
Prices for reasonable to good quality ranged from 160 cents to 178 cents, and poor condition cattle were between 117 cents and 168 cents per kilogram.
More grown cattle were penned, but these 105 head sold to weaker competition, and prices were up to 10 cents per kilogram cheaper also.
Steers made from 156 cents to 179 cents, and heifers between 140 cents and 155 cents per kilogram.
There were two sales of cows noted between 127 cents and 142 cents per kilogram.
