Quality varies and prices mixed

PRICE trends were very mixed over the smaller penning of cattle at VLE Pakenham, which included a larger percentage of heavier cattle.
Overall, the quality of the yarding was mostly good to very good with most of the plainer condition cattle purchased by feedlots and restocker.
The best competition and demand was seen for the good to very good quality vealers and supplementary fed yearlings provided their weight was not over 420 kilograms liveweight.
Prices were unchanged for these, and a number of other young cattle, but as the weights got higher prices fell up to seven cents per kilogram.
The highest priced cattle were again a pen of supplementary fed yearling steers with the potential for very high dressing percentages.
These topped the sale at 235 cents with other very good quality B muscle vealers and yearlings making from 198 cents to 229 cents per kilogram.
The penning of 130 vealers and 600 yearlings included a good number of reasonable to good quality yearlings that made between 165 cents and 190 cents per kilogram.
Most of these cattle sold at unchanged rates with some averages being higher because of better quality.
Competition was not as good for the reasonable size offering of 185 grown cattle, which included some very good quality steers.
Prices were three cents to seven cents per kilogram cheaper for the steers with most making from 165 cents to 176 cents per kilogram.
Some of the best steers had been 100 days on grain.
Heifers sold to more competition, making between 135 cents to 150 cents, but they wee still up to seven cents per kilogram cheaper.
