LANG LANG Rifle Club members will be able to fire at a small bore range on Wednesdays and Sundays.
Civic leaders last week gave the club the go-ahead to utilise the recently upgraded range, despite five objections from people living nearby.
They were concerned the operation would see their serenity and property values adversely affected and result in increased traffic.
But councillor Stuart Halligan said noise from a small bore range was negligible. Cr Halligan said the rate of fire was slow and that noise tests at a nearby greyhound racing club determined that the noise had little impact on the dogs when racing.
Senior Sergeant Dennis Tocock, who approved the upgrade, said that the noise from a small bore sounded like a sharp crack, similar to letting off a small firework.
The rifle club, which has been running for more than 100 years, attracts between 20 to 60 people during competition.
Cr Halligan said the new operation would have no effect on the town in terms of traffic, despite concerns from neighbouring landholders.
The small bore range will operate from 10am to 5pm on both days.
