SATURDAY was a Stableford event at Drouin Golf Club and the first round of the Canon Challenge held over two weeks and supported by Canon.
There were 127 men and 13 ladies in the field and it was the consistent Rex Amey (10) taking out A grade with 41 points from Peter Jackson 40, Mick Lithgow 39 and Brett Dessent 38.
In B grade, Chris Brydon (15) blitzed the field with 40. Runner-up on a countback was Matt Lloyd 37 from Phil Dignan 37 and Jack Gough 37.
Neill Williams (20) posted 41 points to win C grade from new member Brad Hamill 40. Greg Smyth was next on 39 followed by Graham Rawson 38.
Nearest to pins – second: Tony Piner, fifth: Wayne Duckett, 19th: Steve Davey, 23rd (pro pin): Jason Brain.
Jim Gregory had his first-ever eagle on the par five seventh hole.
The CCR was 72 and balls went down to 36 on a countback.
Bernace Miller (18) won the ladies with 36 points from Ann Roberts and Audrey Smethurst both on 35.
MIDWEEK RESULTS
Wednesday’s Stableford competition was well attended with 98 players.
Once again it was Matt Long (0) streaking the field with 44 points (65 off the stick including eagles on the first and seventh) to win A grade.
Runner-up was Michael Santo on 40 from Ian Archer, Mick Whitford and Mick Lithgow both had 39.
In B grade, Lindsay Robinson (16) with 39 points edged out three others on 38 points. They were Jim Bransgrove, Peter Neilson and Louie Uliando.
In C grade, Jeff Reid (30) lowered his handicap with 42 points on his way to a win from runner-up Noel Brereton 41. Graeme Brenchley was next on 40 followed by Alan Fagan, Ritchie Thomas and Bill Todd all on 39.
Nearest to pins – second: Matt Long, 23rd (pro pin): Mick Whitford. Danny Shine had an eagle on the par-four 20th.
Balls down the line went to 38 on a countback and the CCR was 70.
NINE-HOLE COMPETITION
Bruce Horskins won Thursday’s seniors’ competition with 22 points from Colin Moss 20.
Bruce also tied for first place in last Monday’s nine-hole comp. Joining him on 21 points were Graham Dorling and Colin Moss.
VICTORIAN SENIORS AMATEURS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Drouin hosted the second round of the championships last Tuesday with 165 players in the field and 75 clubs from all over Australia represented.
Many visiting Drouin for the first time praised the course and the hospitality by the members.
The four-day event ended with two rounds at Trafalgar last Wednesday and Thursday.

COMING EVENTS
This Saturday is Stableford and the second and final round of the Canon Challenge.
LADIES
Last Tuesday, the Victorian seniors’ championships were held at Drouin and ladies day was forwarded to Thursday.
After a showery and chilly start, the weather rapidly improved and a small field of ladies contested a par event on the Matthew Bennett course. The CCR was plus-one.
The winner was Robyn O’Brien with plus-four on a countback to Margaret Purcell.
Margaret has broken her handicap to 15.
Down-the-line balls went to Joyce Pierrehumbert, Ethel Manley and Ann Roberts.
Nearest the pin on the fifth was Ann Roberts and on the 19th was Joyce Pierrehumbert.
Bev Goodwin won the pro-pin.
Margaret Mitchell won the four-ball-best- ball event with her partner at Wonthaggi recently.
This week is stroke and the Star Medal sponsored by Jill Greenland.
It will be back to normal this week with the nine-hole seniors’ competition back again on Thursday.
Donations are requested for the stall and toiletries for the raffle on charity day, Friday, 2 December.
Members are reminded to enter their names for the Christmas break-up lunch on 6 December.
Senior ladies are also reminded to enter their names for this Christmas break-up lunch and annual general meeting will be held on Monday, 5 December at Yallourn.
