Stroke of luck

I HAVE been an avid reader of The Gazette for many years, and look forward each week to the Letters to Editor.
While many letters contain complaints or criticisms, I thought it would nice to start the new year on a positive note.
In mid-December I suffered a stroke. An ambulance was dispatched promptly and I was taken to The Valley Hospital, where it became apparent I needed to be transferred quickly to Monash Medical Centre.
On arrival at Monash the stroke team were ready and waiting for me. That’s right, no lengthy delays, as time is of the essence when dealing with possible brain damage.
The medical team worked promptly and efficiently, while discussing all details with my very concerned husband and daughter.
Later that day I was transferred to the stroke ward, where I quickly realised how lucky I was.
The following day I lost both my speech and movement, which was very frightening.
At all times the wonderful staff reassured both me and my family, explaining everthing in detail.
I was advised that my fitness was what enabled me to survive (thanks to golf and exercise).
I was expected to go to rehabilitation hospital, but after a few days was well enough to go home and get visits from rehab in the home. This was all organised for me through Southern Health, and explained to me and family.
The personnel involved in this are very caring people, with expertise in speech and occupational therapy.
So many times we hear of complaints about waiting times in hospitals and other criticisms, but overall I think we are very lucky to have such caring, dedicated individuals who work in the health system.
I know I am lucky as most people don’t recover as quickly as I did. I am also lucky to have a wonderful supportive family and friends. Especially the very caring and supportive people at Pakenham Golf Club.
So thank you to everyone concerned with my recovery, and may you and your readers have a happy healthy 2011.
Jean Hoare,
Upper Beaconsfield.
