LA TROBE MP Laura Smyth has called on the State Government to support the introduction of an R18+ category for computer games to protect underage gamers.
“Children and teenagers shouldn’t be exposed to the gratuitous sex, violence and adult themes that are contained in some computer games,” Ms Smyth said.
“At the moment, teenagers in Australia can access games that are restricted to adults in other countries like the UK and USA. Australian kids deserve the same protection as those overseas”
A recent national telephone survey showed that 80 per cent of the Australians contacted said they supported the introduction of an adults-only rating.
In Victoria, support for the proposal was 82 per cent.
“Now is the time for action- I’m calling on Attorney-General Robert Clark to support this important move to better protect our children and teenagers” Ms Smyth said.
