Lions go down by one run in thriller

PAKENHAM hosted Devon Meadows in what turned out to be a thrilling game for the Vivian Shield. Devon Meadows posted a competitive 150 runs and the most disappointing aspect was that, besides Alex Travaglia (61) and Darren O’Brien (25), no batsman reached double figures.
For Pakenham, Russ Lehman took 4/23 from 7.2 overs and Ben Moroney picked up three.
In reply, Moroney got Pakenham off to a good start, reaching 53 before being dismissed, but from there Pakenham’s batsmen got only starts.
This left Pakenham needing a single run to tie the game off the last ball of the match. The pressure got to the batsman resulting in a run-out that saw Devon Meadows home by a single run.
Lucas Carroll took 4/35 and Mick Floyd 3/24.
At Barry Simon reserve, Lyndhurst hosted Clyde, with the visitors winning the toss and batting first. Clyde skipper Dave Denton (74) stayed strong as others fell around him and he and Gavin Adams (26 n.o.) were the only shining lights in a dull innings that saw the score to 7/165.
Mal Perez took 2/20 from five for Lyndhurst in a side that really felt the impact of missing skipper Heath Straughair.
Clyde replied by running through Lyndhurst for 115, with only Adam Baumgardner (30) making a notable contribution.
Nick Miles took 4/18 with the new ball for Clyde, Shane Webster and Daniel Waite picked up two wickets each.
Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll struggled throughout its innings against the surprising Merinda Park, making only 115 runs before being bowled out in 37.5 overs. Tom Keily top-scored with 26. Shannon Mathers (4/25) bowled brilliantly for the visitors and Matt Pongracic took 3/40.
Merinda Park got over the line in the last over of the day, reaching 5/122 from its 40 overs. Brett Whittingham found some form, smashing 39 not out, while Peter Jessop anchored the innings, batting the entire 40 overs for his 28 not out. Tom Keily topped off a good individual game with 2/38.
Nyora made 157 in 34 overs against Emerald. Troy Ferguson and Daniel Morrison worked hard, scoring 42 and 52 respectively, before Nick Fairbank came in and smacked the ball around for 32.
A. J. Walker took 4/34 and Anthony Flint and Clinton Marsh chipped in with two wickets each.
In reply, Emerald was bundled out in just 30 overs for 129 runs, with Clinton Marsh continuing his good form with 57. Nick Fairbank did the damage with the ball, taking 5/17 from eight tight overs.

Beaconsfield knocked up 6/189 against Gembrook, with Brad Eagleton top-scoring with 38 and Rick Cook making 26. For Gembrook six bowlers took a single wickets each. Gembrook in reply was all out for 95 runs, with Scott Anderson (40) the only notable scorer.
Tom Brown, Ben Martin and Matt O’Conner took three wickets each.
An early-morning ground change was a surprise, as Tooradin took on Cardinia at Rythdale Recreation Reserve. Cardinia posting 137 from 34.3 overs with Ryan Campbell and Dylan Allen hit 27 and 24 runs respectively.
Craig Dicks continued his good form 4/27 and Matt Finch made a welcome return with 3/20.
Tooradin scored only 101 from just 25.5 overs. Openers Kane Latham and Shane Somers scored 34 and 20 respectively, but from there not other Tooradin batsman reached double figures.
Jimmy Watts was the destroyer with 5/33 from 7.5 overs and Brayden Browne took 4/26 from his eight.
Cranbourne Meadows hosted Lang Lang, which posting 6/184 from its 40 overs. Gareth Andrews and Nick Beale hit the ball to all parts of the small ground, for 64 each. Jeremy Ryan, Jason Poole and David Waller picked up two wickets each.
Cranbourne Meadows made only 127 runs in 31 overs, with Roger Cotterall (37) the only batsman to make an impact.
Ross Douglas took 3/19 from six overs and Steve Douglas, Alan Jenkins and Aaron Creasey captured two wickets each.
SFX at home took on Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll and posted 6/135 with David Hill making 30 and Aaron Warn 26. Ash Bailey took 2/20 for Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll.
In reply, SFX bowled out Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll for 115 in 38 overs. Justin Vanderzalm making 31 not out. Shannon Warn and Brendan Hunt picked up two wickets each.
