Flystrike – watch out

THE warm, humid weather is causing serious problems for sheep farmers with flystrike continuing to be a big problem – even for shorn sheep.
The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) is calling on sheep producers to be vigilant as flystrike is a significant cause of lost production and welfare concerns in the sheep industry.
DPI acting Regional Animal Health Officer Tyrone Cain said it was easy to become complacent after shearing.
But he said sheep didn’t have to have long wool or be “dirty” to be targeted by flies because the present warm and wet weather was ideal for flystrike anywhere on the body.
“Short wool is providing little protection and we have had reports of sheep producers experiencing difficulty obtaining the appropriate preventive chemicals because of the increased demand this season,” Mr Cain said.
“The type of sheep is usually an indicator of susceptibility but even prime lamb producers are not spared this season and are reporting flystrike in flocks that normally are not affected.
“Sheep producers need to monitor their sheep for the presence of flies, regularly and closely and, where necessary, treat appropriately.
“The proper application and choice of treatment will depend on the length of wool and the future of the sheep.
“It is important to be aware of Withholding Periods (WHP) and the Export Slaughter Interval (ESI) as these will vary with the different chemicals.”
For further advice contact the local veterinarian or DPI veterinary or animal health officer.
