VOTERS in Cardinia Shire’s Bunyip Ward will go to the polls in March, following Cr Bill Pearson’s decision to retire after five years as a councillor.
Cr Pearson announced in December he was retiring for family reasons, but will continue to serve as a councillor until the by-election process is completed.
The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) will conduct a by-election by postal vote to elect a new councillor for the Bunyip Ward, which includes the townships of Bunyip, Garfield, Maryknoll, Nar Nar Goon, Pakenham Upper, Tynong and Tonimbuk.
The shire will host an information session at the council offices in Henty Way for prospective candidates at 6.30pm on Wednesday 9 February.
All people interested in standing for election are encouraged to attend.
Cardinia Shire Council Chief Executive Officer Garry McQuillan said the information session was an ideal opportunity for prospective candidates to learn more about the role of a councillor.
“This is a very exciting time in Cardinia Shire’s development and councillors play an important role in representing the interests of residents and ratepayers in making decisions that support, protect, grow, guide and strengthen our communities,” Mr McQuillan said.
“We would particularly like to encourage women to consider standing for election. The information session will feature an address from La Trobe City Councillor Lisa Price who will provide her insights into the challenges and rewards of life as a female councillor.”
