Soul back into school

By Nicole Cohen
BEACONHILLS College has taken on the role of doubling their chaplain staff, to four full-time chaplains this year.
Anglican Bishop Paul White along with Uniting Church Moderator Isabel Thomas Dobson was set to formally induct three new chaplains at a service yesterday at Beaconhills College, Pakenham Campus.
College headmaster Tony Sheumack said it was an interesting anomaly that while many parents who inquired about the school may not necessarily be church-goers.
“They just desire Christian values for their children.”
The importance of a good chaplaincy program could not be over-emphasised: “it puts a soul into your school,” he said.
Head of Beaconhills’ Pakenham Campus, Richard Prideaux, who was a college chaplain last year, said parents wanted their children to learn courtesy, honesty and resilience at school and all other solid Christian values.
“But they are not looking for their children to be thoroughly converted.”
Beaconhills chaplains are responsible for the college’s religious education program from Early Learning to Year 12.
They are also involved with the spiritual life of the entire college community and the counselling and mediation.
The new chaplains are Rev Chris Leadbeatter, Chaplain of Berwick Campus and Rev Suzie Ray, associate chaplain, Berwick Campus and Rev Sarah Hobba, associate chaplain, Pakenham Campus, who will join current Pakenham Campus chaplain Rev Peggy Kruse.
