Cyber skills lacking

PARENTS have spent up big equipping their kids with the latest gadgets ahead of the new school year – but many have failed to equip them with cyber skills, Telstra research has revealed.
Four in 10 Victorian parents surveyed will send a child to school this year with both a lap top computer and a mobile phone. The research, however, revealed parents with children aged 10 to 17 haven’t set aside time to talk to their kids about cyber-safety issues, such as protecting their privacy and managing approaches from cyber-bullies.
“In this digital age, internet connected devices such as lap tops, mobile phones and mobile tablets can be just as important to learning as paper, pens and textbooks,” Telstra Country Wide Area General Manager Melbourne Metro South East, Vicky Allen, said.
“They are a great way for kids to access online resources, like news archives, virtual libraries, dictionaries and videos.”
