Nothing’s stopping Something from crack at home Cup

HALF brothers He’s Nothing and He’s Something were aptly named.
He’s Nothing – who had the nickname of Dirty Harry – was nothing, never making it to the racetrack.
As for He’s Something – named Harry – he was on track to being something, until a serious mishap at the track.
That was at the Pakenham racecourse in 2007, just eight or nine days out from the Caulfield Cup, which he was to contest.
A “screwed back” leg – coupled with endless amounts of TLC from his owners – got He’s Something back on course.
But then in 2009, during a race at Moonee Valley, He’s Something did a suspensory ligament. More time on the sidelines, more treatment – and much,much more TLC from Kim and Gayle Mayberry and Gayle’s daughter Steph Dorning.
Now He’s Something, the winner of four of his 27 starts, will be at Pakenham on Sunday for the 2011 Cup.
“It’s his home track, but he’s rarely there,” Gayle said. “He does most of his training in the hills at home at Pakenham Upper.
“It was a bad time for Kim when He’s Something broke his leg, as Kim’s previous wife had passed away not long before.
“He’s Something has a lot of ability, but he’s got a lot more heart. He’s a nice horse, whereas He’s Nothing was a very naughty horse.”
Kim Mayberry, a farrier, bred He’s Something. He is the trainer and part-owner with Gayle, “the assistant trainer”, and Steph Dorning, Gayle’s daughter.
And it could be a big weekend for 18-year-old Steph.
On Saturday night, she is in the running to be crowned the winner of one of five sections in the Racing Victoria Limited employee of the year.
Steph is a track rider and stablehand at the Mayberry property – and will start as an apprentice jockey later this year.
