Vealers lead the way as demand continues to rise

PRODUCERS reaped the benefits again last week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, as demand continues to rise with vealer prices testing the market record making to 256.6 cents per kilogram for processor veal.
Bullocks also improved above and beyond topping at 224.2 cents.
Quality coupled with demand should hopefully continue to reward vendors for their efforts.
Four hundred and fifty four vealers made to 256.6 cents, 11 cents better than last sale and the average was eight cents higher at 227.8 cents.
One hundred and twenty three bullocks as mentioned topped at 224.2 cents.
This was 13 cents better than last week’s top, with the average 16 cents higher at 203.4 cents.
Seventy steers rose three cents on average to 203 cents and the top was 10 cents better at 226.2 cents.
Seventy seven heifers were the only category to ease on average with their average back seven cents to 191.3 cents, although this was mainly the responsibility of the lighter end of the section as good quality heifers topped at 225 cents, 10 cents upon the previous sale.
Thirty eight solid bulls sold to stronger demand topping at 187.6 cents with the average six cents higher at 165 cents.
Eleven bullocks remained steady at 191.8 cents to top at 200 cents and 292 cows were penned with a larger proportion of heavy beef cows, which were very strong and lifted the average six cents to 154.5 cents.
Middle range dairy cows were also strong, while lighter conditioned cattle eased marginally but still sold well on the day.
