THERE is no market at VLE Pakenham next Monday and supply increased but it was only by a small increment.
As a good number of processors are not working a full week at the present, the day out due to Labour Day will have little affect on demand.
Having said that, prices for vealers were again dearer, and most other cattle sold at unchanged rates.
However, the quality was not quite as good with some cattle suffering from the lack of warmth.
Around 600 vealers were penned with the quality varying. Fewer of the top quality B muscle vealers were yarded, which saw these rise two cents to five cents, making 230 cents to 258.6 cents per kilogram.
Some of the higher prices were for heavy vealers weighting over 400 kilograms, and up to 460 kilograms liveweight.
Other vealers made mostly between 200 cents and 245 cents per kilogram with feedlots and restockers purchasing a number of cattle in this range.
The quality was not as good, and fewer heavy steers were penned in the offering of 560 yearling steers and heifers.
Supplementary fed yearlings made from 235 cents to 245 cents with most others between 195 cents and 228 cents per kilogram and there was little if no distinction between steers and heifers at times.
Plainer shape D muscle cattle made anywhere between 175 cents and 220 cents per kilogram depending on the needs of processors, and feedlots.
Although there was over 400 grown steers and bullocks penned less of the really good quality bullocks were offered.
This affected prices by two cents to three cents with prime C muscle bullocks making from 194 cents to 208 cents, and grown steers made to 217 cents per kilogram.
The price range for manufacturing bullocks and steers was large with sales noted between 153 cents and 200 cents per kilogram. Isolated sales of grown heifers were from 165 cents to 197 cents per kilogram.
