Excited president says goodbye

FORMER Berwick Rotary Club president Sjaak Kusters addressed his faithful Rotarians for the final time at the annual change-over dinner at Castello’s in Berwick last week.
“When I was asked if I’d like to be president of the Rotary Club of Berwick back in 2007, I was suitably surprised, considering the membership list available to choose from,” he said.
“As I accepted my tenure the emotions started to consume me.
“I was flattered, surprised, excited, daunted, really happy, but sort of apprehensive, you know “Oh My God”.
The exuberant Mr Kusters then said: “And now it’s all over, where on earth did all that time go, especially the last 12 months?”
During his acceptance speech at last year’s changeover dinner, Mr Kusters made a promise to inject “fellowship” into the rotary club as president. And that, he did.
It’s been a socially hectic year for the Berwick Rotary club which hosted more than 30 events, including, a 50th birthday celebration, a winery night at Carlei Green Vineyards, a Melbourne Cup Day soiree, a conference in Shepparton as well as barbecues and a Christmas party – just to name a few.
“Our marvellous club is known for its fellowship, it is the glue that keeps us together, so all our meetings, projects and events are immersed in friendship,” he said.
“On a personal note, Joy – my wife – and I consider many of my fellow club members, close and personal friends now.”
On a sad note, Mr Kusters made the full function room aware of the passing of fellow Rotarian Lex Buchanan, who’d been a member for 39 years, and read out his letter of resignation in a tribute to his service to the club.
“It is with much regret that I must tender my resignation as a member of the Rotary Club of Berwick, due to ill health,” the letter said.
“I leave with many happy memories of involvement in the club.
“My best wishes to all members of the Rotary Club of Berwick for continued success in the future.”
Incoming Rotary president Garry Cooper congratulated outgoing president Mr Kusters for a successful year and was looking forward to continued success.
“My vision is to involve all members and allocated everyone a role at this club,” he said.
“I’m looking forward to fun, fellowship and a successful year ahead.”
