A HUGE reduction in supply was seen this week at VLE Pakenham.
Most of this was triggered by a fall in the number of heavy yearling steers, and bullocks penned.
Also noticeable was a turn in quality with a number of cattle in plainer condition, and the very wet and muddy paddocks left their mark with a lot of cattle having mud well up their legs.
All of the regular buyers were present, and the lack of supply lifted the price of a lot of the cattle by three cents to eight cents per kilogram.
There were 285 vealers penned, which did include some very good quality that made between 240 cents and 266 cents per kilogram.
Most other vealers of reasonable to good quality made from 200 cents to 245 cents with plainer grades 170 cents to 205 cents per kilogram.
There was strong feedlot and restocker competition for most of these plainer types.
Nearly 400 yearling cattle sold mostly to the dearer trends with steers making from 172 cents to 215 cents, and supplementary fed to 242 cents per kilogram.
A small portion of the yearlings were heifers, and they made mostly between 172 cents and 190 cents with grain assisted to 214 cents per kilogram.
Only a small number of grown cattle were penned with some being older crossbred steers and heifers.
The better quality bullocks made 165 cents for very heavy to 184 cents, and were mostly three cents to five cents per kilogram dearer.
Others made between 140 cents and 168 cents per kilogram for manufacturing steers and grown heifers.
These cattle generally sold at unchanged rates.
