Shifting sands of market offerings

THE supply of cattle was smaller and the quality was all over the place with a large mixture of breeds and quality penned at VLE Pakenham.
In fact, the only thing missing was an elephant and a camel.
Because of the lower numbers, and plainer quality, a lot of cattle sold to strong demand and were mostly two cents to six cents per kilogram dearer.
However, the poor quality did affect price averages of some classes of cattle, all of the regular buyers were present, and the demand from feedlots was better this week.
Only 370 vealers were penned, and there was few top quality among them.
The best quality made from 235 cents to 265 cents, but most made between 190 cents and 238 cents per kilogram.
The penning of 385 yearlings included some very good quality supplementary fed steers and heifers that made between 225 cents and 254 cents per kilogram.
Strong demand for the yearling steers and heifers saw all sell to the dearer trends from 185 cents to 222 cents per kilograms.
The only downturn was the quality, and this saw prices range from 116 cents to 178 cents per kilogram for a large range of weights, breeding and condition.
There was only 160 grown cattle penned, which included some good to very good quality bullocks.
These made from 185 cents to 195.2 cents, while most others made between 150 cents and 183 cents per kilogram. Some very heavy yearlings made from 192 cents to 200 cents per kilogram.
The VLE Draw for the week commencing Monday 17 January is as follows: 1, Nathan Gibbon; 2, Landmark; 3, Elders; 4, Alex Scott; 5, Mick Hornsby; 6, Everitt, Seeley and Bennetts; 7, Rodwells; 8, SEJ.
