FIGHTING knocks from Ross Kortholt and David Williams couldn’t pull Catani across the line against Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll, as the Blues copped a five wicket defeat after a massive batting collapse.
Catani would have immediately regretted its decision to bat first immediately as it slumped to 3/23 with Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll’s new ball pair of Jackson Payroli and Ash Bailey claiming quick scalps.
The fight back rested on Kortholt and Williams with the pair making 87 for the fourth wicket as they struck the Marygoons around Nar Nar Goon Reserve.
Williams was dismissed by the glove-work of Leigh Tomkins off Sam Vanderzalm and Catani was back in trouble at 4/110.
Kortholt’s demise was the start of the collapse for Catani as their last seven wickets were removed for only 24 runs.
Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll was errant with the ball, contributing 32 extras to Catani’s modest total.
Nineteen wides accounted for more runs than nine of Catani’s least prolific batsmen combined. Bailey and Vanderzalm both claimed two wickets.
In reply, Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll chased down the runs with relative ease, only losing five wickets.
Justin Vanderzalm (33) and Sam Pullen (31) were the major contributors.
The Marygoons move to outright second position on the ladder, while Catani sits in second last.
NYORA endured the wrath of Leigh Otten and Aaron Warn with St Francis Xavier Old Collegians routing the Maroons by nine wickets.
Number three batsman Troy Ferguson battled to keep Nyora on the park, making 37 out of Nyora’s 57, but he couldn’t find any help from the other end.
Otten and Warn extracted wickets almost at will, with Otten taking his first five-for of the summer of 5-11 from eight overs and Warn was miserly taking 4/8 from 4.2 overs.
SFX chased down the total quickly to take the rest of the afternoon off.
Chris Shepherdson (19) was the only X Men to fall with the chase taking just 11 overs.
David Hill top scored for SFX with 22 not out.
St Francis is knocking on the door of the top four, with percentage separating the Old Collegians and Emerald.
Nyora remain in last place on the ladder and will be relegated unless something drastic happens.
DEVON Meadows showcased their Premier cricket aspirations as they thumped third place Merinda Park by 107 runs.
The Cobras sent the Panthers in to bat and after the quick wicket of Jason Holman, Devon Meadows settled in to make 5/165 from their allotted overs.
Shane Filius top scored with 33 not out, Darren O’Brien made 31 and Daniel Steet accrued 26. For Merinda Park, Dale Cunliffe was the only multiple wicket taker with 2/20.
In response Merinda Park was put to the sword by Mick Floyd, who claimed 7/31 off eight overs.
Floyd, along with new ball partner Peter Zauner (2/23) bowled all but five balls of the innings and skittled Merinda Park for 58.
Shannon Mathers (13 not out) and Cunliffe (10) were the only Cobras’ batsmen to make double figures as wickets fell rapidly.
Merinda Park’s opening four were dismissed at 4/7 and from there it didn’t get any better for the visitors, eventually bowled out in the 17th over.
Floyd’s seven-wicket haul is the new benchmark for best bowling in the District competition this season.
Devon Meadows sits on top of the ladder and Merinda Park remains in third.
LYNDHURST Vikings and Emerald fought out a low-scoring affair, with the Vikings getting home by seven runs.
Lyndhurst made 9/90 from their 35 overs, with Emerald’s Nicholas Kearton their chief destroyer, claiming 4/17.
In reply, Emerald lost Rod Smith early, but stabilised through Anthony Flint, who struck 30 to push the Bombers towards the target.
After Flint was dismissed on 30 with the score at 3/59, the rot began for Emerald, as the last seven wickets fell for 24. Emerald was bowled out for 83.
Trevor McGeachin claimed four wickets for Lyndhurst and Mark Henry took three.
Emerald retain their spot in the top four and Lyndhurst stay in finals contention with the win putting them sixth and half a match outside the four.

NAR Nar Goon/Maryknoll smashed Gembrook by 83 runs.
Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll was sent in by Gembrook and the decision was paying dividends for the Brookers as it claimed 5/47 to leave the Marygoons with the hard yards ahead of them.
Michael Lewis answered the call, hitting 35 and remaining not out.
The Marygoons set the mark for Gembrook at 108. Gembrook’s John Shipp took 4/36 and Will Davis claimed 3/14.
In response Gembrook was left in awe of Sean Somers, with the Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll opening bowler claiming 7/17 from 7.5 overs to skittle the Brookers for 25.
Daniel Glen chipped in for 3/7 from his six overs.
Dean McPherson made 10 for the Brookers with six ducks from the rest of the order highlighting the destruction that Somers inflicted.
Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll moves up to fifth while Gembrook is firmly locked to the foot of the ladder and is 24 points adrift of seventh.
TOORADIN gave out a cricket lesson to Upper Beaconsfield, as the Seagulls bowled the Maroons for 65.
Tooradin shared the wickets around as Upper Beaconsfield collapsed.
Lachlan Henstock (17) and Andrew Besecke (22) provided the majority of Maroons’ score but the remaining nine were unable to mount any significant offence.
Justin Hinkley completed the rout for Tooradin as he smashed an unbeaten half-century, with six fours and a six, to get the Seagulls home in the 21st over on 1/67. Kyle Gibbs took the only wicket for Upper Beaconsfield.
Tooradin move up to third while Upper Beaconsfield slide from second to fourth.
LANG Lang tore apart Cardinia to win by 96 runs. Lang Lang won the toss and batted first, compiling 132 from 34.5 overs.
Ricky Caddell top scored for the Swamp Tigers with 50. After Caddell was dismissed at 3/89, Lang Lang stumbled to the close of innings losing 7/25.
Ryan Little took 3/16 for the Bulls with Kallan Braid-Ball (2/22) the other multiple wicket taker.
Cardinia started their run chase poorly and it never got better, slumping from 3/18 to be all out at 36.
Dillon Allen and Braid-Ball both top scored on eight.
Lang Lang’s opening ball pair Rogan Fraser (4/18) and Ross Douglas (4/12) did most the damage for the visitors.
Lang Lang remain in second place and Cardinia, after winning their round two and three matches, has gone winless since, to slump to seventh.
CLYDE defeated Cranbourne Meadows by six wickets, as the Cougars cantered to the Rebels’ total of 78.
Lee Murdoch (20) and Andrew Clappers (23) burdened most of the scoring duties for Cranbourne Meadows, with four ducks finishing off the innings.
Clyde cantered home in 30 overs at 4/84.
Adrian Savage was miserly in his 1/9 off six overs. The win keeps Clyde on top of the Sub-District ladder and Cranbourne Meadows was pushed down to sixth.
