Nankervis in third spot

STRONG southerly winds made racing difficult as the best in the country ventured to Sunshine to take part in the Australian 1/8th (scale) IC Truggy and EP Buggy Nationals last weekend.
A total of 47 guys from around the country took to the Sunshine racetrack to drive around motor control cars for a weekend in the national championships –pretty much any regular bloke’s dream.
As it turned out, the strong winds wreaked havoc with many of the cars, but not for Beaconsfield’s Alan Nankervis whose knowledge of the course powered him home to finish third overall in the Truggy event and boost his standing to Australia’s third best.
Nankervis designed and built the track at Sunshine, and despite never racing on it, showed a good understanding of the jumps that many of the competitors came unstuck on.
Nankervis also attributed his third placing to the “war of attrition” that played out over the one-hour final race.
“I wasn’t expecting to make third, and I really should have finished further back, but you needed a lot of attrition to race for that long,” Nankervis said.
“There were massive winds and a lot of drivers got blown off the track, but knowing the track and knowing how to jump is what helped.”
