STANDING at six foot four and a half inches, Graeme Lawler has always been taller than most people he meets.
But when the talented golfer joined the Emerald Golf Club, he never expected to land the nickname of ‘Tree’.
Graeme blames club legend and notorious humorist Dennis Fuller for the nickname that has a habit of following him across the luscious greens of the course.
“It’s great fun. A good nickname really adds to the spirit of the place,” Graeme said.
Unlike his nickname, Graeme’s golfing skills are not to be laughed at, although he is first to admit he loves his golf win or lose.
“I just love to play a round and enjoy myself, winning or not,” he said.
The Clematis resident has a handicap of 23 and has recently commenced lessons with Emerald Golf Club professional Bob Spencer.
Graeme enjoyed the club’s pro-am day on Saturday and congratulated the club on the terrific organisation that went into it.
“It was a superb day, everyone had a good time. I played with some great players,” he said.
And how did Graeme play?
“Indifferently,” he laughed.
“I was overcome by the occasion, I think.”
It is rumoured throughout the club that Graeme is a very popular player to partner for a round of golf, particularly on a hot day.
And Dennis, who is a storyteller in his spare time, thinks he has it worked out.
“It’s because Tree is about 27 foot 16 inches and throws enough shade to cover six other golfers,” he concluded.
