TEN people were caught and fined $6100 recently for harvesting abalone illegally at Cowes.
Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Fisheries officers intercepted the abalone harvesters at Cowes following a tip-off on the 13FISH offence reporting line.
The group was seen collecting shellfish from the reef near Justice Road.
The offences included taking abalone that were less than the minimum size and exceeding the catch limit.
Fisheries Officer Ben Carroll said infringement notices and official warnings were given to the group, with fines totalling approximately $6100.
The undersized abalone were returned to the water.
