Mixed results for Garfield

IT was mixed success for Garfield Bowls Club in the Mid Gippsland competition on Saturday – its division-two, number-one side losing to Traralgon RSL, while its number-two side had a good win against Drouin in division six.
Garfield Bowls Club played host to Traralgon RSL in division 2 and Drouin in division 6 where conditions were ideal for bowls.
In division 2 Jim Oliver’s side had a tight tussle all day, but prevailed at the end getting a three on the last end to win 24-20.
Jim Oliver, Bob Lamport, Reg Mattingley and Malcolm Shaw won by four shots.
Les Phumphrey’s side struggled most of the day against a strong RSL side and went down by 14 shots.
Les Phumphrey, Billy Brown, Hank Wouters and Don Knight went down 16-30.
Col Mills’ side had a very tight game all day with no more than three shots in it, eventually losing by that margin after dropping a five on the 22nd end.
Col Mills, Alex Mentiplay, Bill Charles and Frank Prins went down 21-24.
Steve Whyte’s side got off to a flier, but to the credit of Traralgon RSL and lack of concentration by the Garfield side, RSL got within three shots at the end after being up 21-7.
Steve Whyte, Gary Payne, Shayne Oliver and Colin Carmichael won 28-25 overall. Garfield went down 89-99 in a disappointing result.
Garfield number-two side had a very good day, led by Gordon Beer’s side of Les Shatwell, Stuart Robinson and Bill Pearson, winning comfortably after one stage being 31-2 up eventually going on to win by 20 shots.
Bob Hope’s side had a very tight game all day with no side really dominating and went down in the end by three shots.
Bob Hope, Lawrence Wright, Wayne Gunton and Adrian Helmuth lost 20-23 overall Garfield won 60-43.

CHRISTMAS BREAK-UP

Saturday was the club’s Christmas break-up and fun night with the meal sponsored by Norm Sefton Meat, Pakenham and then the arrival of Santa (Col Mills) followed by a trivia night.
Lyn Oliver was thanked for all her preparations during the day and Gary Payne for cooking the food.
Col Mills was also congratulated for winning the singles final on Thursday night, defeating Steve Whyte 25-17.
