Explosion rocks houses

RESIDENTS spilled on to streets in the Quarry Hills area, Berwick about 10pm on Monday after a massive explosion rocked hundreds of homes.
Berwick CFA captain Alan Boyd said a caravan in Vista Court exploded and was destroyed.
He said the explosion was felt and heard in hundreds of homes surrounding the blast and residents of surrounding streets came out of their homes in alarm.
Berwick CFA firefighters had just returned to the station from an earlier call to explosions and a fire in Leemak Crescent, Berwick and immediately responded to the 10.05pm call.
They found the caravan in the rear yard of a house had been ripped apart by an internal explosion.
The force of the blast destroyed the shell and much of the internal fittings of the caravan.
Mr Boyd said it was believed the explosion was the result of a gas buildup in the van.
“The blast actually blew out the flames and there was little fire damage. Firefighters were amazed that noone was injured in the event.
“Damage was estimated to be in the vicinity of $15,000,” he said.
