U3A grows

By Jim Mynard
CASEY University of the Third Age president Max Buchanan has commended the work of past presidents and committee members of the group.
Mr Buchanan said they had contributed a considerable amount of hard work to place the U3A in a strong position.
He said the name change to Casey U3A elevated the public profile of the group.
“We are now invited to participate in City of Casey sponsored events and we are represented on the council’s Ageing Positively committee.
“Another highlight was formation of the Casey U3A Singers, a 35member choir.
“This was the initiative of Judith Van Velsen, who is now the choir secretary.
“We have also introduced a certificate for distinguished long service and this has been awarded to Elsie Rubenstein, Pat Stone, Ted McConchie, and the late Harry Leigh for service to Casey U3A.”
Mr Buchanan said new classes offered last year were Mah Jong, electronic keyboard, digital camera and a short course on story telling.
“For 2006 Brian Parry is replacing Great Religions of the World with a meditation class.
“Judith Markel is returning with a poetry class and Fred Elliott will offer a pencil and ink drawing class.
“Our sincere thanks go to retiring tutors Trish Borg, and Dr Ted Stephens.”
Mr Buchanan said the group was privileged to have use of the wonderful facilities at Fiddlers Green, Berwick.
