CARDINIA mayor Bill Ronald sported his mayoral robes on Australia Day for the first time since becoming mayor.
The sight was a surprise to locals, who are used to seeing the mayor around town in his work clothes.
Like all farmers, Cr Ronald generally prefers comfort and function to sartorial elegance and has previously been seen pounding the streets in a pair of athletics ‘skins’ as part of his training for the Masters Games.
Cr Ronald’s first official appearance in the robes was at Kooweerup’s Australia Day ceremony at the community centre.
“I haven’t had the robes on since 1993 and this is the first time I have worn them since I’ve become mayor,” Cr Ronald said.
The mayor certainly stood out in royal blue and gold.
It’s unknown whether he plans to shear in them later this year.
