MONASH University plans to establish a faculty of town planning at its Berwick campus.
Campus director Professor Phillip Steele told a community building seminar at the university last month that plans for the course were well in hand.
Casey mayor Neil Lucas welcomed the move.
He said there was a serious shortage of town planners in local government across Australia.
“Additional training opportunities would be a significant benefit to local government.
“The detailed nature of town planning legislation is such that even simple proposals need professional input.
“This has led to many town planners moving from local government into the private field.
“This is a great initiative by Monash,” he said.
