A CLEAN UP of Tynong was led by students from prep to VCE who braved the heat on Friday.
All students and teachers at St Thomas Aquinas College worked together on the Schools’ Clean Up Day to tidy up their town.
Head of science Teresa WalkerHassett said the day had gone really well despite the heat with the teachers and 266 students cleaning up the school, town, railway line, stormwater drains and highway.
She said the kids had collected three or four full uteloads of rubbish. “Inside the township and around the school was surprisingly clean,” she said.
“It just goes to show how proud the people are of the town that it is kept so clean. But further away from the township around the drains and highway there was quite a bit of rubbish.”
She said the younger students had cleaned up around the school fence line while the older secondary college boys had gone to the railway line and the girls to the highway.
“The girls had a ute running up and back and they still didn’t have enough garbage bags.”
She said the boys found some interesting items at the railway line, including a tractor tire and a wheelie bin.
“We gave them all icy poles when they got back. They did a fantastic job,” she said.
“It’s a credit to them that they walked all the way up there and back in that heat.”
Mrs WalkerHassett said it had been the first time the school had done anything like this but the students had really enjoyed it and were already talking about next year.
“They were really keen by the end of it. They also came back on that afternoon a lot more aware of littering.”
