Beaconsfield Superules on top

BEACONSFIELD Superules’ firstdivision side was sitting on top of the ladder after the first two rounds.
In the first game of the year Beaconsfield comfortably accounted for Marcellin and last weekend beat Diamond Valley by seven goals.
In the previous two seasons Beaconsfield had not won a game at Diamond Valley, however that all changed when Beaconsfield shot off to a sixgoal lead at halftime.
The first 10 minutes of the first quarter was a torrid affair with neither side getting on the scoreboard. The game was played between halfback lines and both defences did well, however at the 12minute mark Gubbins posted Beaconsfield’s first major.
This gave Beaconsfield momentum and, after goals through Treasure and Richardson, Beaconsfield finished the term with 3.4 to no score.
The Beaconsfield midfield in McGavigan, Sloan, Hamilton and McKenna were dominating play and giving first use of the ball to their forwards.
The return of Scott Sutherland added another dimension to the Beaconsfield forward line with his hardness at the ball and long penetrating kicks.
The back line was strong, switching the play on most occasions.
Conduit and Mickelburough were running the ball out of defence with ease while Vandenberghe and Wright were giving a contest at marking situations.
During the term Richardson, Hamilton and Gubbins posted majors while the defence only allowing Diamond Valley a point for the half. During the third term Beaconsfield was outscored, allowing Diamond Valley to post two goals.
But Diamond Valley’s possession and chipping game was not paying off and Beaconsfield played a more accountable brand of football, going long and direct to the forward line. Abel on his wing was linking up well and set up many forward attacks while new players Richardson and Wilson were giving Diamond Valley something to think about up forward.
The final term was competitive and neither side was unable to post a goal until late in the term. Turner, after having a quiet day by his standards, stood up and posted Beaconsfield’s first goal for the last term, which put the game beyond reach of Diamond Valley.
Scores: Beaconsfield 10.13.73 d Diamond Valley 3.2.20. Goals: M.Gubbins 3, K. Richardson 2, R. Treasure, D. Hamilton, M. Turner, D. Abel, S. Sutherland 1. Best: P. Conduit, P. McKenna, N. Bussacca, M. Gubbins, D. Abel.
