CRANBOURNE horse Penny Veejay recorded a superb victory in the Triple T Insurance Services Warragul Cup last Sunday in front of a big crowd at Logan Park.
Cool weather conditions did their best to keep patrons away, however the attendance and TAB betting figures were both up slightly on last year’s meeting.
The Easter Sunday experiment for Warragul’s biggest trotting race appeared to work and the meeting should only get bigger in future years.
Penny Veejay came from well back in the field to snatch a laststride cup victory. It was driver Chris Alford’s second straight win in the race, having driven Frame Game last year.
The winner is trained by Noel Alexander and Jayne Davies. Alexander also prepared previous cup winners Copper Leopard in 1982 and Ohara in 1997.
The trainerdriver combination also collected minor race victories with Backinthehighlife and That’s the Spirit.
Multiple successes also came for fatherson combination Graeme and Gavin Lang, with Countess in Lace, Yakuza and Chico Verano. Gavin Lang also drove Arivee to win the first race.
Trotting returns to Warragul on Wednesday, 3 May.
