ORDINATION To The Deaconate by Bishop Coffey Jeff Kleynjans will be ordained a Deacon in our parish on Friday evening at 7.30pm on 9 September. This is a great occasion for Jeff and his family, and also for our parish. All parishioners are warmly invited to attend.
Considerable preparations are required for the occasion – including music and song. Parishioners who can help in the singing department are required. (The singing practice will double as a preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation to be celebrated on the same weekend 10 and 11 September.)
Catering for supper after the ordination will be another of our responsibilities. Anyone who would like to be part of the singing or catering group are asked to please contact Sr. Christina or Father Mahoney on 5941 1217.
Catholic Mass is now being broadcast on television every day at 10am, on Aurora Community Television, which is Channel 183 on the Foxtel Digital and Austar subscription services.
The televised Mass does not take the place of the local parish celebration of the Eucharist.
For 31 years, Channel Ten has been generously broadcasting “Mass for You At Home” at 6am on Sunday mornings. Over the years the people who have appreciated the TV Mass most, have been in nursing homes, hospitals, hospices, prisons, and in regional and remote parts of Australia.
Being on the digital service with Foxtel or Austar means there is not a place within the country that cannot be reached.
St Patrick’s School is holding an “Operation Christmas Child” program designed to get families to help in a real practical way to bring joy to children across the world.
It is an outstanding way for children to make a difference and maybe understand just a little about their less fortunate “Brothers and Sisters” across the world. All families are urged to get involved in this program.
A Regional Healing Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Church Iona on Thursday, 25 August at 7.30pm. The Mass has been organised by the Catholic Charismatic Renewal Movement of the Diocese, and all are most welcome.
Next week, the Annual Centacare Collection will be taken up. The Director of Centacare Gippsland will speak on the work of Centacare at Mass.

This service is more traditional in music and service style. It has Holy Communion every week and the service is conducted from the Australian Prayer Book.
10am Family Service
This service is for families young or old and is a more relaxed service with a combination of modern and traditional music. It includes Kid’s church (which is held once a fortnight during the service) and there is a crèche also available which has a sound system so that you can hear the whole service while in the crèche.

Kid’s club for years four to six (GLU)
At St. John’s we run a kid’s club for years four to six. The leaders are responsible members of St. John’s who also get involved in the fun.
Come and join in the activities at GLU, tell your neighbours and friends about the fun that years four to six have they include games, food, fun and a devotion time. GLU runs on a Thursday from 4pm to 6pm during school term and only costs $3 a week.
OP Shop
We run an Op Shop on Mondays and Thursday from 9am to noon. We have a variety of things to sell, from clothes to crockery, books, videos, shoes, pictures, magazines, furniture. Come along and visit us, and join us in a cup of tea or coffee.

Kooweerup Christian Church (a church outreach from Pakenham Christian Church) has a midweek meeting every Tuesday, 7.30pm at the Kooweerup Community Centre, Rossiter Road, Kooweerup.
The story of the believing centurion is probably the best example of great faith in the New Testament (Matthew 8:510). Jesus was so impressed with the centurion’s faith, He remarked that He had not found such great faith in all Israel.
The centurion came to Jesus not for himself but on behalf of his servant who was ill. He probably heard of Jesus’ healing ministry and was even a follower of Jesus himself. Without hesitation, Jesus said to the centurion, “I will come and heal him.” (Matthew 8:7). It was the Lord’s will to heal the servant.
Not only was Jesus willing, but by His own suggestion, was ready to go out of His way to the centurion’s home to perform the healing.
What encouragement this must have been, to sense Jesus’ compassion, to witness His eagerness to heal and to know that God can! The centurion’s humble, confident response to all this was most remarkable.
Read verses 8 and 9. According to Jesus in verse 10 this man had ‘great faith’. When people dare to trust God, such faith is pleasing to Him. Hebrews 11:6.

About 50 people, comprising the growth to Maturity group and Alpha participants spent last weekend at Mill Valley Ranch.
Life Gets Better! camps provide encouragement and one on one support for children who have experienced death, divorce or other major grief. The camps are organised by C.H.I.P.S. (Christians Helping in Primary Schools). The next camp is to run from 9 to 11 September. Buddies are needed, with training and police checks essential. United Youth on Friday, 19 August has Uproar from 7.30 to 10.30pm. Boys’ Brigade meets on Monday nights with 3 sections. Anchor boys (six to eight years) in the Creche, Primary Age from 7.30 to 8.30pm and Secondary Age from 7.30 to 9.15pm, both in the Fun Factory. Kids Church begins each Sunday at 9am in the Fun Factory, which is directly behind the main building.
Pakenham
WHO is the church in Pakenham? Sometimes we fall into the trap of thinking that we are the church in Pakenham and forget that many others are worshipping in Pakenham at a similar time. A small peace candle was presented to us from the Gladstone Uniting Church to say hello from them to us and to remind us that we belong to a worldwide group who believe in God.
Steph Tashkoff, the International Mission Development Officer of the Synod Justice and International Mission Unit visited us today. Steph, who had travelled from Geelong to visit us, was accompanied by her twoyearold daughter Nakaya. Her aim was to help us reflect on the history and culture of indigenous people with emphasis on our Australian people.
Steph looked at the situation of the indigenous people in our country compared with the people in the Bible, particularly the Pharisees and Canaanites who visited Jesus in the story presented in Matthew Chapter 15.
This story initially shows Jesus ignoring the Canaanite woman who came to him to get her daughter cured. The Disciples wanted Jesus to get rid of the woman but Jesus does take action, he does respond and the daughter is healed.
Can we open ourselves to engage with the unknown? As Christians we cannot afford to just look at those like us but need to open our hearts and minds to the concerns of those who are in very different situations to ours the refugee, the asylum seeker, the aborigine.
How can aboriginal people change the stereotypical picture society has of them? Their aboriginality means they cannot change some of these as they are so ingrained. Justice for the Canaanite woman is no different to the aboriginal people who cry out for justice today. It is up to us as followers of Jesus to learn and listen and make changes for the better.
