LANA Hance’s hard work and continued dedication to her studies has been rewarded after she received an academic excellence award at the 2006 Premier’s VCE Awards last Thursday.
The 18yearold Lang Lang local excelled in Contemporary Australian Society studies and was placed in the top five students in the state.
The former Leongatha Secondary School student, who achieved an ENTER score of 92.95, was ranked top of her class in four of her six VCE subjects.
Lana described the Contemporary Australian Society unit as a sociologytype subject that touched on various issues including Aboriginal welfare, family violence and the immigration system in Australia.
“I was very surprised and happy to win the award and it required a lot of work throughout the year, but I thoroughly enjoyed the subject,” Lana said.
She is currently studying Social Work and Human Services at La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus and is unsure about what career path she will take.
“I don’t really know what I want to pursue after I finish my degree, but I am really enjoying my course at the moment,” she said.
Lana now lives on campus at Bundoora but heads home to Lang Lang every second weekend to catch up with family and continue her parttime job at the local Foodworks Supermarket.
“Living on campus really helps my studies and it is also a great environment to meet people from uni,” she said.
