Thieves hit footy club

THIEVES hit the Nar Nar Goon football club at the end of April, making it the latest target in a string of thefts that have rocked the peaceful community.
They stole $5500 from the safe, and footy club president Dale Evans was concerned that the thieves knew exactly where to find the safe.
“It looks like they may have had some information about the setup of the club because they went straight for the safe and touched nothing else,” Mr Evans said.
He said it would have taken some time for the thieves to break into the safe so they must have been in the clubrooms for quiet a while.
“They jemmied the door open on the safe, which would have taken at least one to two hours.”
The money, raised from gate receipts and bar sales, was uninsured which means club volunteers will need to spend more time organising fundraising events to cover the loss.
“We are all volunteers, and it is a real kick in the guts for everyone involved,” he said.
But Mr Evans said the club would bounce back and would continue to provide a vibrant football club for the community.
“I don’t know how we are going to raise the cash again but we will keep going and continue to find ways of raising money.”
The football club is upgrading security in the hope of deterring any future attacks.
Thieves also broke into the Nar Nar Goon and Bunyip kindergartens last month, while the Bunyip and District Community House was burgled and a small amount of money stolen.
