Locals dive in for dear LiFE

CARDINIA LiFE officials are ecstatic with the public response to the new $11 million leisure and aquatic centre in Pakenham.
The YMCA operated complex welcomed more than 700 excited people through the doors on its opening day and the turnstiles have continued to tick over since.
Local residents have made a commitment to their fitness and wellbeing with 580 people already signing up as members of the complex.
The figures are stacking up for LiFE officials who say membership and attendance numbers have exceeded original expectations.
Several community leisure groups have moved their activities to the centre and are making the most of brand new facility.
The Pakenham Arthritis Group and the Cardinia Piranhas Swim Club are conducting their sessions in the new pools while the Cardinia LiFE Aquatic Education program has also commenced.
More than 400 members have joined the classes to learn essential swimming and water safety skills. Lessons are conducted in two of the centre’s three pools and allow class participants to learn the basics of water education in a safe environment.
The centre is buzzing away from the water with various aerobic and group fitness sessions taking place and members also making use of the latest gym equipment.
Complex manager Michelle Young said the response from the community had been fantastic and everything had progressed smoothly in the opening three weeks.
“It has been an exciting time for all involved and we are thrilled with the reaction from everyone who has come to the centre,” Ms Young said.
Some debate has surrounded admittance and membership prices to the new centre but Ms Young said users were getting great value for their money.
“The YMCA has a commitment to provide quality programs and services to our members and guests and this sets Cardinia LiFE apart.”
Ms Young said staff at the centre had taken to their roles with enthusiasm and were setting a high standard.
“We have employed about 75 people. About 70 per cent of those people would be locals who have been great.”
