Garfield comes back to victory

GARFIELD had a tough day against Leongatha but managed two wins in senior grades, including a topgrade comeback victory.

A GRADE

Garfield played Leongatha in a thrilling match and a hard battle between two top sides that saw the lead change often. Jade Dawes and Lisa Biffen again played tightly and kept Garfield in the game. After a disappointing third quarter, Garfield rallied and dominated Leongatha in the last quarter. Accurate shooting by the goalers, led by Bridget Soumilas, combined with determined work through the midcourt by Bess Henry, Julie Collis and Jo Collis set up a convincing win.

Awards: O&H Hotel Warragul Bridget Soumilas, Garfield Hotel Bess Henry.

B GRADE

Garfield maintained its winning streak. Despite Leongatha increasing the pressure on Garfield and threatening a 14goal lead, Garfield never faltered. Dianne Collis played a strong defensive game and worked well with Casey Dawes to produce many turnovers. Jess Marsh played another strong game in goals.
Scores: Garfield 41 d Leongatha 33.

In slippery and windy conditions Garfield played a taller side but played a great game despite being handicapped by the injury to Kelly McMillan, whom the club wished a speedy recovery. Casey Dawes displayed her versatility by playing in defence before being used as a goaler where she kept the team in the game. Tegan Edwards ran for the entire game and was a solid contributor in the centre.
Scores: Leongatha 49 d Garfield 22.
Awards: Best Casey Dawes, Blockbuster Bec Draper, Hungry Jack’s Tegan Edwards.
