PEARCEDALE spearhead Mathugh Vagg tore the Frankston Bombers’ defence apart, snaring nine goals in the Panthers 21point upset victory in Nepean League on Saturday.
The Panthers regained momentum with the win and retained their hopes of a finals’ appearance by moving clear in sixth place with only percentage separating them and fifth side Somerville.
Vagg was joined among the best players by teammates Chris Waghorne and Paul Jamieson.
Dromana had a 33point comefrombehind result over Somerville, thanks to a 10goaltotwo final term.
Star Tigers’ fullforward Simon Goosey was well held and only kicked three goals on the day.
Other results in round 16 saw favoured teams Langwarrin, Crib Point and Rye score comfortable wins over Rosebud, Red Hill and Tyabb respectively.
In Peninsula League, Mt Eliza lost top position after going down to EdithvaleAspendale by two points in a thrilling match.
The result was a major upset with the Sea Eagles coming from behind at threequarter time, led by talented playmaker Mark Fitcher, who finished the afternoon with six goals.
Chelsea had a big 79point win over Mornington, despite the absence of seriously injured coach Tim ScottBranagan, who suffered a dislocated neck the previous week.
Frankston YCW downed Hastings by 25 points and Karingal had a solid 40point win over Bonbeach, while Seaford defeated Pines by 33 points in a lacklustre match of the day.
