Phone tower boosts coverage

A NEW phone tower looms on the outskirts of Pakenham.
The tower, near Henry Road on the western edge of town, was installed recently to improve mobile coverage.
Residents were concerned about the visual impact of the tower when it was first proposed, saying its 40metre height was unprecedented in the local area.
Telstra acting area general manager Christy Ditchburn said the new tower would benefit local businesses, residents and visitors to the area.
Coverage would be improved between Officer and Pakenham and would extend to include the Pakenham Bypass, she said.
“This additional coverage is the direct result of local customer feedback and will provide significant benefits to the local community as well as visitors to the region,” Ms Ditchburn said.
Telstra has recently announced a threeyear plan to upgrade to a national 3G national mobile network.
Ms Ditchburn said Pakenham West would be included in this plan.
