I WISH to comment on the sustainability ideology, which was the subject of a four-page addition to last week’s Gazette.
Sustainability means “able to be maintained at the same rate or level”. That is, it means maintaining the status quo.The genius of our Western civilization, that which distinguishes it from all other cultures and civilizations, is the idea of constant improvement.
This stems partly from the ancient Greeks, but mostly from the Christian desire to improve the lot of the poor. All our political, social, economic, medical, scientific, and technological advances stem from this desire for constant improvement.
So, to avoid stagnation, we should replace the sustainability ideology of maintaining the status quo with the philosophy of “constant improvement”.
