Prices settle back

Another reasonable yarding of 550 head greeted buyers at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, on Wednesday 6 May.
Condition was mixed ranging from some very well finished head to some light condition among the secondary pens.
The combination of cooler weather and light condition impacted prices, holding averages back to firm rates.
Extra bullocks were yarded with some very heavy weights among the pens.
A few less heifers saw demand firmer in this category and returned the best average lift.
Steer numbers were halved this week and demand was slightly easier as some feedlots were absent.
Veal sold to firm demand with the top end pushing prices to a new high.
The yard average was up two cents to 236.2 cents.
Eighty two bullocks topped at 274 cents, back four cents, and averaged 249.1 cents, firm; 63 heifers topped at 262 cents, firm, and averaged 219.1 cents, up three cents; 81 steers topped at 272 cents, back nine cents, and averaged 234.4 cents, back two cents and 305 veal topped at 294.2 cents, up 22 cents, and averaged 231.4 cents, firm.
A few less bulls on Thursday resulted in stronger competition and although the top price was easier, the average lifted 11 cents to 212.4 cents with the top sale back four cents to 258.2 cents.
Bullock numbers were back, with the few yarded topping at 246.2 cents to average three cents up at 215.6 cents.
Cow numbers were down by 90 head and the large numbers across the state has started to give buyers stocks, which in turn results in prices easing.
Five hundred and fifty eight cows reached 247.2 cents, back three cents on the previous week and the average was three cents easier at 176.2 cents, and the yard average was 180 cents, 3.6 cents easier.
