RYE won its first premiership in 24 years when it downed the previously undefeated Langwarrin by three points in the Nepean League grand final at Frankston Park on Saturday.
The Demons held on grimly as hot favourites Langwarrin booted two late goals in timeon to reduce the margin from almost three goals. The Kangaroos were attacking again when the final siren blew, signalling wild celebrations by successstarved Demon fans.
After an evenly fought opening half, the Kangaroos kicked clear to lead by 14 points at halftime and looked to have control of the game.
Rye turned things around after the long break, booting eight goals to three in the third term and taking a 16point advantage into the final quarter.
Despite wonderful individual efforts from Ricky Ramsdale (eight goals), Damien Tobin and Tarone Smith, Langwarrin could not catch the determined Demons who were led to victory by VCFL medallist Travis Shaw, Leigh Clarke and Grant Wilson.
Langwarrin won the reserves flag with a kick after the final siren and also took out the under18 premiership.
Controversy reigned in the Peninsula League preliminary final when Mt Eliza stole victory over Seaford by two points with a goal after the final siren.
Senior field umpire, and Southern Umpire Association president Jason Hughes, awarded veteran Redleg Luke Curry a 50metre penalty after he was deemed to have been impeded after taking a mark late in the game.
Curry was brought to within 30 metres of goal as the siren went with his side four points down. He lined up and shot accurately to catapult his team into the 2006 grand final against minor premiers Chelsea at Frankston Park next Sunday.
