Push for mobile library

CASEY Council wants to establish a mobile library service. Balla Balla Ward councillor Wayne Smith successfully asked the council to write to all political candidates in the November State election to support a funding program for a mobile library service in the City of Casey.
Cr Smith pushed relentlessly to have the Hampton Park Library established and made a point of mentioning the need at least once during every council meeting until funding was made available.
He now says there is a need to extend the Hampton Park facility and establish a mobile library.
Casey manager arts and leisure Robyn Bowen said in a report of the Tuesday, 19 September council meeting that the mobile service would cost just over $1 million to establish and $165,000 a year to operate.
Cr Smith said it was thought that Casey could use the Cardinia mobile library when the Emerald Library was opened, but the Cardinia unit was already fully committed in other areas. Ms Bowen said no research or community consultation had been undertaken to determine the need or the feasibility for a mobile library service in the City of Casey.
