Poor quality puts off buyers

AT VLE Pakenham there were approximately 750 export and 1000 young cattle penned, representing an increase of 270 head from the sale of a fortnight ago.
There was a full field of buyers present and operating in a cheaper market overall generally due to quality.
Quality was mixed with some very good grain and crop assisted drafts along with many plainer winter affected cattle.
Demand was solid from processors for the better finished lines however the wintry coated cattle affected most averages.
The vealers eased three cents to 10 cents for a limited selection.
Yearling trade steers eased seven cents to 12 cents for most while the steers to feed on were mixed but generally firm.
A much better quality run of yearling heifers sold dearer overall but once categorised they sold at similar prices to last sale.
The better end of the grown steers and bullocks sold firm to three cents easier while the secondary lines slipped 11 cents per kilogram with quality an issue.
The vealers sold mostly from 240 cents to 305 cents per kilogram.
Yearling trade steers made between 271 cents and 300 cents per kilogram.
Yearling heifers suited to the trade sold between 235 cents and 300 cents per kilogram. Feeder steers made from 232 cents to 291 cents per kilogram.
Grown steers sold from 255 cents to 309 cents per kilogram.
Bullocks made between 262 cents and 308 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight grown heifers sold between 223 cents and 270 cents per kilogram.
Heavy weight Friesian manufacturing steers made from 222 cents to 226 cents with the crossbred portion from 235 cents to 265 cents per kilogram.
