Good condition lifts prices

A smaller number was yarded at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange, Warragul, last Wednesday for the Fat Sale, and there was an improvement in prices again on the back of a better percentage rate of good condition cattle.
Fewer bullocks were penned and with demand still strong for good heavy head, the average lifted a much improved margin.
Heifer numbers were similar and were firm to stronger.
Feedlots were again strong in the steer section and pushed the average up.
Fewer vealers on offer saw processors lift in the better pens giving a rise in the average price.
This week’s yard average was up 15 cents to 274 cents.
Twenty seven bullocks topped at 300 cents, up eight cents, and averaged 294.8 cents, up 18 cents; 58 heifers topped at 291.2 cents, up 17 cents, and averaged 258.6 cents, up 26 cents; 48 steers topped at 325 cents, up 30 cents, and averaged 288.9 cents, up 22 cents and 265 veal topped at 329.2 cents, up 12 cents, and averaged 272.0 cents, up 13 cents.
A larger yarding of 596 head greeted buyers on Thursday and with demand still good prices lifted across the categories.
Twenty three bulls made to 285.6 cents, up 15 cents, and the average was up 14 cents to 243 cents.
Fewer bullocks this week saw nine head penned and the top was 261.6 cents, with an average of 234 cents, down from the previous week.
Cow numbers were up by 200 head to 541, with a top of 282.6 cents, up and the average was 13 cents better at 197.6 cents.
Thursday’s yard average was up 10 cents to 201.
