It’s cool to walk to school

STUDENTS put their best foot forward in Walk to School day last Wednesday.
Schools around the PakenhamBerwick area took part in ‘Walktober’, which celebrates a month of walking activities aimed at becoming part of the daily routine to encourage both the health and social benefits of walking.
Walking school bus driver and parent of students at Beaconsfield Sue Mellords said 80 students joined the Walking School Bus to launch Walktober.
She said the walking school bus operated frequently from Beaconsfield Community Centre, but did not generally get as many students involved.
Mrs Mellords said she would love to see more students taking part on a regular basis.
“It’s a pity we don’t get a better uptake. It is such a good way for the students to get a bit of exercise, it’s fun, it’s free and it reduces petrol usage,” Mrs Mellords said.
Lakeside Lutheran School at Pakenham also joined in the spirit of Walktober with the entire school taking a walk around the lake enjoying the healthy activity.
The walk around the lake has become a regular event during good weather.
Cardinia Shire has appointed a new Walking School Bus project officer Kellie McDougall who will promote opportunities in conjunction with VicHealth for walking activities across the shire.
“We need to encourage all children to make walking part of the daily routine. It helps to keep them fit and healthy and encourages social interaction,” she said.
To get involved contact 1300 787 624.
