Weights down on dry conditions

The first fat sale for 2016 at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange was held on Wednesday 6 January and contained 1030 head.
Demand remains firm across the categories although average weights are starting to ease with the dry conditions taking hold.
Some buyers have not started back to work yet and others still hold stock and with restockers reluctant this fat sale was regarded as remaining firm, with the yard acreage 12 cents better at 273.3 cents.
Thirty-nine bullocks made to 286 cents, up six cents, and averaged 275.3 cents, up 40 cents.
Sixty-nine heifers made to 285 cents, up four cents, and averaged 247 cents, up seven cents.
Seventy-two steers made to 286 cents, up four cents and averaged 256.8 cents, back three cents.
Eight hundred and six veal made to 328.6 cents, up eight cents and averaged 278 cents, up six cents.
The first bull and cow sale saw 557 head yarded, three major buyers were absent and this had an impact on prices with the yard average easing 21 cents.
Forty-eight bulls topped at 258.6 cents to average 22 cents easier at 217.3 cents.
Twelve bullocks made to 256.6 cents and averaged 221.4 cents, which was 33 cents easier, and 496 cows reached a top of 258.6 cents to average 25 cents back at 169 cents.
