Shows given $4m pledge

SHOW societies have been promised a $4 million boost under a reelected Bracks government.
Gembrook MP Tammy Lobato said all Victorian agricultural societies would be eligible to apply for grant support.
“The Bracks Government has already provided more than $1.5 million under the Agricultural and Pastoral grants program, which has resulted in facilities being upgraded at showgrounds, including Akoonah Park Berwick,” Ms Lobato said.
“But there is more to be done.
“Under the new fund, Labor will more than triple funding to a new infrastructure grants program, which will ensure arenas, pavilions, sheds and other buildings continue to be upgraded, ensuring the vitality of many shows.
“Agricultural show societies, like the Berwick and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society, which are based largely on committees of volunteers and leading local producers, are vital in pulling rural communities together.”
Ms Lobato said the Berwick Show was one of the highlights of the year for the community in the southeast, and this had been especially important during times of drought in providing an opportunity for farming families and the broader community to come together.
She said showgrounds benefited families, often also being used by local sporting and social clubs.
“Events like the Berwick Show are part of a great tradition that deserves our ongoing support,” she said.
