KAMBRYA Secondary College, Berwick will have a strong team in the Great Victorian Bike Ride due to start this weekend.
The team, Jazz, Hills and Thrills, 15 students, two teachers and four parents will meet at 5am on Saturday for a trip to Wangaratta for the start of the 520kilometre ride.
Team coach and specialist puncture repairman teacher Bruce Sharp said the team had been training since midJuly.
“But this term we have been full on with an 8am start every Sunday. We have ridden to Southbank several times, Studley Park Boathouse, Carrum, Williamstown, Jells Park, Tooradin and Sorrento.
“We think we are ready for the big 10kilometre hill ride from Mount Beauty to Myrtleford on day four. The five boys who made up the first Kambrya group last year have come back for more aching muscles, along with 10 other adventurous students from Years nine, 10 and 11, including one Year nine girl.
Mr Sharp said Graeme Booth gave the team a great deal on specially designed Kambrya College jerseys so that the team looked the part.
“This year’s ride is fundraising for diabetes. Three Kambrya staff members and several students at the school have diabetes as well as one of our parent riders. If you would like to sponsor our riders and contribute towards the diabetes fundraiser, please contact Ruth Scott at the school on 9702 6266. We are becoming excited and counting down the days,” he said.
Mr Sharp said this was young people at their best.
“It’s like a miniature community activity and a nice thing to do with the students. When it is all over we will keep the group together and enjoy a monthly social ride,” he said.
