Yard firms on greener pastures

THE 536 head penned last Wednesday at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange sold to slightly firmer demand.
Weight averages in the heifer and veal sections were lighter and with the good rain in the previous week or so giving a green tinge, several restockers were keen to purchase pen lots and feedlots were also strong on the day.
There was not a full contingent of processors present but, given the continuing strong demand, agents were pleased with the sale outcome.
Bullocks were firm with half the numbers compared to the previous week weight averages were steady, and only 29 steers were on offer with some lacking condition easing the average.
This week’s yard average was up nine cents to 276.7 cents.
Twenty two bullocks reached 285 cents, back five cents, and averaged 266.6 cents, up two cents, 30 heifers reached 279.2 cents up 14 cents, and averaged 240.8 cents, up 18 cents, 29 steers reached 288 cents, back two cents, and averaged 258.3 cents, back six cents.
Four hundred and fifty five veal reached 325 cents, up seven cents, and averaged 282.4 cents, up nine cents.
Thirty three bulls on Thursday sold to firmer demand, topping at 277.2 cents, with the average of six cents better at 204.8 cents, 546 cows were penned and made to a top of 248.6 cents.
Several buyers are still missing from the Thursday market and this held prices back marginally.
Cows this week averaged two cents back at 185.3 cents and the yard average was three cents easier at 187.2 cents.
Draw for 10 and 11 February is: 1, Scotts; 2, Landmark; 3, Sej; 4, Gibbon; 5, Elders.
