Numbers down for Anzac lead-up

THERE was a much smaller yarding on Wednesday last week at Baw Baw Livestock Exchange with 235 head penned prior to the Anzac Day long weekend.
On the Thursday cow sale there were nine bulls and 455 cows.
Demand varied across the categories with some pen lots of light weights especially in the steer and vealer sections.
Restockers took the advantage with smaller head present to build up numbers in the hope of good rains to provide feed.
Very few bullocks were yarded but managed to lift the top price on the back of good quality.
Heifers lifted last week with both the top and average prices rising.
Steers sold to better demand with the lighter numbers pushing buyers to lift the price and the lighter secondary vealers eased as the better pens held value.
The week’s yard average was up two cents to 273.8 cents.
Seven bullocks topped at 285.2 cents, up three cents and averaged 253.6 cents, back 13 cents, 31 heifers topped at 296.2 cents, up 10 cents and averaged 265.5 cents, up 32 cents, 21 steers topped at 326.2 cents, up 26 cents, and averaged 288.5 cents, up 32 cents, and 169 veal topped at 331.6 cents, firm, and averaged 275.6 cents, back four cents.
Numbers were back on Thursday as well, and considering there were three major buyers absent demand for the 469 head yarded was strong.
Only nine bulls were offered and made to 291.6 cents up four cents, and the bull average was 252.1 cents.
A total of 455 cows sold to firmer demand making to 288.6 cents and the average this week was 19 cents better at 181.1 cents, with a yard average of 183.1 cents, up 16 cents on last week.
